RAKU CRANK MODELLING CLAY

Raku Crank Modelling Clay is a highly grogged, versatile clay body developed for applications where thermal shock resistance, strength and dimensional stability are important. Its combination of high plasticity and coarse grog makes it particularly well suited to large hand-built pieces, sculpture and Raku work.

The clay's excellent thermal shock resistance makes it an ideal choice for Raku glaze firing, where ceramic pieces experience rapid changes in temperature. These properties also make the clay suitable for constructing pizza ovens, tandoori ovens and saggers.

A high grog content gives the clay an interesting, characterful texture while helping to reduce shrinkage and increase resistance to warping during drying and firing. With a texture rating of 6/10, it offers a noticeably coarse surface while retaining good plasticity for modelling and hand-building techniques.

Raku Crank has a broad firing range of 1060–1280°C and fires to a buff/grey colour. Due to the relatively large particle size within this heavily grogged body, some surface "spit out" may occur during firing and should be considered part of the material's characteristics.
