Potterycrafts Wax Resist is a versatile ceramic surface tool used to block out areas from glaze, slip and underglaze for both practical and decorative effects. This pre-mixed wax emulsion dries to form a barrier that prevents glazes and colours from adhering to the treated surface, allowing potters to create negative designs, crisp lines and controlled patterning, or simply to preserve bare clay or underglaze details in fired pieces.

Apply Wax Resist to greenware or bisque with a brush or sponge over the areas you wish to keep free of glaze or slip. Once the wax has fully dried, glaze can be applied normally — the glazed areas will ride over the waxed zones while they resist any adhesion. Any excess glaze on the waxed surface should be wiped off before firing. During kiln firing, the wax burns off cleanly, revealing the original clay or underglaze underneath and leaving a sharp contrast between glazed and unglazed areas.

Wax resist techniques are widely used in ceramic decoration to create crisp designs, patterning, layered effects, or to protect rims, bases and detailed areas while glazing.
